Vitamin E stimulates phosphatidylserine synthesis in the hippocampus and improves cognitive function at old age

چکیده
Aged humans and animals demonstrate cognitive decline. Improvement of short-term memory performance in aged beagles with a nutraceutical supplement containing phosphatidylserine (PS) and vitamin E has been demonstrated. The purpose of the present study was to examine if alpha-tocopherol acetate could alter PS metabolism in the hippocampus and to improve cognitive function of aged rats. Intragastric administration of alpha-tocopherol acetate to 24-month-old rats for 14 days resulted in increase of newly synthesized PS level in the hippocampus of experimental animals as compared with control rats. At the same time, there was a decrease in [14C] phosphatidylcholine content in the hippocampus of experimental rats with respect to controls. The changes in phospholipids levels seen in the hippocampus of experimental animals due to alpha-tocopherol acetate administration were associated with increased number of active avoidances and decreased latent period of avoidances on acquisition of a conditioned reflex in a shuttle box. The data obtained in the work provide evidence that alpha-tocopherol acetate is a powerful modulator of phospholipids metabolism in the hippocampus and its function at old age.

P26: Vitamin D Administration, Cognitive Function, Blood Brain Barrier Permeability and Neuro-Inflammatory Factors in High-Fat Diet Induced Obese Rats
Recently neuro-inflammation and cognitive impairment has attracted attention. It has been suggested that obesity lead to cognitive impairments induced by neuro-inflammatory markers like nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) and reduced neurotrophin factors like brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus. Also, increased blood brain barrier (BBB) permeability. Because of the neuro-prot...
متن کاملLong-Term Vitamin E-Deficient Mice Exhibit Cognitive Dysfunction via Elevation of Brain Oxidation.
Vitamin E inhibits oxidative processes in living tissues. We produced vitamin E-deficient mice by feeding them a vitamin E-deficient diet to verify the influence of chronic vitamin E deficiency on cognitive function. We measured cognitive function over a 5-d period using the Morris water maze task, as well as antioxidant enzyme activity and lipid peroxidation in discrete brain regions, and tota...
متن کاملVitamin D3 attenuates oxidative stress and cognitive deficits in a model of toxic demyelination
Objective(s):Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease. The prevalence of MS is highest where environmental supplies of vitamin D are low. Cognitive deficits have been observed in patients with MS. Oxidative damage may contribute to the formation of MS lesions. Considering the involvement of hippocampus in MS, an attempt is made in this study to investigate the effects of vitamin D3 on...
متن کاملP111: Effect of Human Neural Stem Cells on Neural Hyperactivity in Kindeling Rat Models
The excessive electrical activity of neurons is reported in many diseases including: Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Epilepsy. Electrical overactivity in hippocampus accelerates the depletion of neural stem cell (NSC) and impairs the neurogenesis in hippocampus. It is believed that neurogenesis in hippocampus improves the cognitive functions. In this experiment, we use kindled mod...
متن کاملVitamin E therapy prevents the accumulation of congophilic amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the hippocampus in a rat model of Alzheimer’s disease
Objective(s): Vitamin E may have beneficial effects on oxidative stress and Aβ-associated reactive oxygen species production in Alzheimer’s disease. But, the exact role of vitamin E as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis still needs to be studied. Hence, we examined the therapeutic effects of vitamin E on the density of congophilic amyloid plaques and neur...
